My review of Midnight Sun 2024

A few years ago, I read the female version of this book. This year, I accidentally stumbled upon the male protagonist's perspective, which was quite surprising. It took me a few days to finish reading the book, and then I casually glanced through some reviews.

Some 1-star reviewers mentioned Edward being whiny, a woman hater, etc. Let me clarify a few things ((SPOILERS)):

  1. Edward hated his life as a vampire, being the only single one among 3 couples. I'd whine too. But that changed when he met Bella.
  2. Yes, he wanted to kill Bella for her blood's scent, not her body odor. He fought his vampire instincts hard.
  3. What drew him to her was her unreadable mind. He'd never experienced that before, making her fascinating.
  4. Edward doesn't hate all women. He loves Esme and has a brother-sister relationship with Alice.
  5. He doesn't belittle Rose's trauma but dislikes her pettiness and vanity.
  6. Rose is upset because Edward prefers Bella. She thinks she's the most beautiful and should be treated as such.
  7. He doesn't forbid Bella's friends but dislikes Jessica for her fake friendship.
  8. Edward knows his actions are wrong but feels an overwhelming need to protect Bella, even from himself.
  9. He respectfully rejects Tanya and blocks out naughty thoughts from others.
  10. Being a vampire for decades affects social skills and norms.
  11. Vampires are mentally and physically out of place due to frozen likes and dislikes.
  12. Edward's ability to see people's darkest thoughts makes him out of touch with humanity.
  13. He never forces Bella; he'd leave her alone if she asked.

This book isn't necessarily for younger readers. Edward's inner conflict may seem annoying, but he's fighting his instincts throughout the saga. If you liked the series, you might enjoy this book. The dislike for it stems from misinterpreting Edward's struggles as toxic. It's about his rediscovery and striving to be better.

In conclusion, I enjoyed the book. Some negative reviewers didn't read it fully, but it's worth giving a chance.
