I’m feeling too much, too soon.
“Do you have your sketchpad with you?” he asks.
“Yeah. I carry it everywhere with me. Kind of sad really.”
“Not at all. If I could carry my surfboard everywhere with me, I would.”
“You really love surfing.”
“Yeah,” he breathes the word out. Then, his eyes meet back with mine.
“I thought maybe you might want to sketch out here after dinner, which we should eat before it gets cold.” He opens the pizza box.
“Are you going to watch me sketch?”
His lips tug up at the corners.
“I can look away while you do it, if you want?”
“No.” I smile. “I kind of like it when you watch me draw.”
Our eyes meet again.
“Me, too.”
Adam pulls up outside my apartment building and turns the engine off, plunging us into darkness, except for the low light of the streetlamps.
We were out for hours up at Point Dume. After we ate, I drew for a while, doing a sketch of the view, and Adam watched, asking me questions as I drew.
It was perfect.
Then, we went for a walk until darkness forced us back to the car.
Now that he’s driven me home, our date is over. I’m just reluctant to leave him. I’ve never had such a great time as I’ve had with him.
I turn in my seat to face him. “Thanks for a wonderful afternoon slash evening. And for the ride home.”
“Thank you for saying yes to going out with me.”
“I was always going to.” I smile, resting my head against the seat.
“Oh, I know.”
“Cocky.” I laugh.
“Nah. I’m just irresistible.”
That he is.
“Are you going to let me pay you for this drawing?”
He’s referring to the sketch I did of the view from Point Dume.
“No, because that would be beyond weird—you giving me money while we’re out on a date.”
“Good point.” He chuckles. “Well, thank you for the drawing. It’ll look great next to my other one.”
I get my bag from the car floor, my rose in my hand. I’ve hardly put it down all night. “I should get inside.” I reach for the door handle.
“I’ll walk you to your apartment.”
I almost sigh a breath of relief because my time with him isn’t quite over yet.
We climb out of his car at the same time, and he meets me at my side.
We start the walk to my apartment, side by side, and I feel his hand brush against mine. Then, his little finger hooks onto mine until he has worked his fingers into mine, and he’s holding my hand.
The sizzling sensation from his touch on my skin is indescribable.
My heart is going nuts, and my breathing is out of control.
“Well, this is me,” I say as we reach my front door.
Reluctantly I let go of his hand. I get my key out of my bag and turn to face him.
He’s a lot closer than I expected. We’re literally standing an inch apart.
I can feel the heat of his body, and he smells so good, like the ocean and something so uniquely him.
I look up into his face. He’s already staring down at me. And the way he’s looking at me…it’s like need and desire and a whole other bunch of stuff I can’t even begin to explain. It makes my toes curl, and my own need unfurls inside of me.
His hand comes to my face. His thumb brushes over my skin and grazes the edge of my lips, making me shiver.
I have never felt anything like this before, the way I feel with him right now.
I’m pretty sure he’s going to kiss me. God, I hope so.
“You said if I wanted to see you again, I should ask you at the end of our date.” His voice is rough and deep in the silence. “It’s the end of our date, so I’m asking. Spend the day with me tomorrow. Go surfing with me.”
“Yes.”
A smile lifts the corner of his lips. “Yes?”
“Yes.” I grin.
His eyes flicker down to my mouth. Something hot and dark enters his gaze, making my mouth go dry.
I swallow. Then, I lick my lips.
His eyes flare and lift to mine. Desire is burning wildly in his eyes, in the heated silence.
Need shoots down the length of my spine.
I have never wanted a guy to kiss me as much as I want Adam to.
“I’m going to kiss you now,” he whispers.
Thank God.
All I can do is nod. I’m struggling to breathe, so speaking isn’t even an option.
He lowers his head to mine, and then his mouth is on mine…and—
Oh my God.
It’s not that I’ve kissed a lot of guys because I haven’t, but the feel of Adam’s lips on mine…is perfection.
He tastes like pizza and mints. It’s a weird combination when you think about it, but it works on him. But then again, anything works on him.
His other hand comes up, holding the nape of my neck his fingers push up into my hair.
I can’t think or breathe. I can only feel his mouth on mine, and I never want it to end.
I part my lips on a sound of need, my hands sliding up his chest. His tongue gently sweeps over mine. Then, he sucks on my lower lip, and he’s pulling back, far too quickly for my liking.
“Tomorrow,” he says, sounding way too composed.
Our faces are only millimeters apart, his eyes staring into mine.
I’m so not composed. My breaths are coming out in quick short pants. I’m a mess of emotions, and hormones.
I really want to kiss him again.
“Mmhmm.”
He chuckles softly. Then, removing his hands from me, he steps away.
My body cries out in distress for him to come back.
“I’ll pick you up at seven a.m., so we can get there early and catch some good waves.”
“Mmhmm.”
“Evie?”
“Yeah?” I’m still gazing at him—well, gazing at his mouth to be exact. He has really nice lips.
“What time am I picking you up?”
I come to a little, focusing on his eyes. Realizing that I’m behaving like a total girl, my face heats. I clear my throat, gathering my wits. “Seven.”
He smiles at me, and I feel it deep inside.
“I’ll see you then.”
I watch as he turns and leaves down the steps.
I fall back against my door, touching my fingers to my lips, the feel and taste of him still there. The kiss was short, but I feel like he’s been touching me for hours.
My legs are like jelly while my heart threatens to burst out of my ribcage.
I stay there until I hear his car pulling away, awakening me to move.
I unlock the front door and let myself in.
My dad is in the living room. He never goes to bed until I’m home, not that I’m ever usually out late. I’d text him earlier while I was waiting for Adam to come back with the pizza, to let him know I was out with a friend.
“You have a good time?”
“Yeah. I did.” I can’t contain my giddy smile.
Dad gives me a curious look, so I tell him a quick goodnight, and I head to my bedroom, looking in on Casey as I pass her room. She’s fast asleep.
I drop down onto my bed, pressing the rose to my nose again.
I feel giddy with excitement.
I place the rose on my bedside table, and then I set my alarm for six in the morning. So much for my sleep in. I’m getting up even earlier than I normally do for work.
But ask me if I care.
Not at all because I’ll be spending the day with Adam.
Oh God, am I in trouble. After having this time with him today, I’m feeling all kinds of crazy about him. So, what will I be like after a full day with him tomorrow?
I’ll be done for, that’s what I’ll be.
So, freaking done for.
Enter
ing the water, I paddle out on my board, pushing through the waves. Paddling out farther, I need big waves.
I need to surf Evie out of my head.
I need the peace that only being out here can give me.
It’s been five days since our talk. I haven’t spoken to her since. I have caught glimpses of her on my way back in and out of the hotel as I pass by the coffee shop, but I’ve avoided going in there.
I’ve had to go to Starbucks. So, now, I’ve lost my decent fucking coffee as well.
I’ve been staying away from her for many reasons, and it’s not just the fact that she broke my heart. Seeing her again has screwed me up so much.
I knew I wasn’t over her—I’d have to be stupid to ever think I was—but I didn’t realize how badly I’d want her again. The urge to touch her and taste her was overwhelming. Just breathing the same air as her was fucking killing me.
Standing there, staring at her, I was eighteen all over again.
From the moment I’d seen Evie sitting up on that rock eleven years ago, I’d been obsessed.
I lusted her, then loved her, and then hated her. I’ve mentally chased her for the last ten years, never giving her up.
My obsession has always been there.
I never could get enough of Evie. And no matter what she’s done to me, whether I love her or hate her, I will always want her.
I fucking hate that.
I hate that she’s my weakness. She controls my life, and she’s not even a part of it.
Seeing her after all that time…it felt like it should have been more explosive, bigger somehow, epic—not just me yelling at her in a hotel room.
I’d spent that whole day pretending to listen at my shitty meetings when what I was actually doing was preparing in my head what I would say to Evie when I saw her, while also watching the clock like a fucking hawk.
Then, when the moment came, it didn’t go how I’d expected it to, and really, I still don’t have any answers.
I expected closure, needed it, but all I’ve got is a truckload of more fucking questions and the incessant urge to fuck her.
No matter what was happening between Evie and me, I always wanted her—even when she was pissing me off, which was not that often.
But wanting her now, after what she did to me…I’m not really sure what that says about me. Probably that I’m fucked up.
The woman shreds my heart and screws up my life, and all I can think about is getting her naked and fucking her.
That’s one of the reasons I’m avoiding her—because fucking Evie is the last thing I should do.
Also, I have something to tell her.
In my hypocrisy, I was fighting her for answers when I had a pretty big thing to tell her myself.
I fucked up in the worst way, and I’ve pretended for a long time that she deserved it. That it didn’t matter because I couldn’t find her, but now, she’s here, and it matters.
In my own pathetic way, I was punishing her by not telling her.
But now, it’s time. I have to tell her.
I just have to find the strength to see her again.
I see a big beautiful wave approaching, and I get that familiar feeling of adrenaline pumping through my veins. I’m so ready to ride Evie out of my head, even if only for a few precious seconds. I get up on my board. Then, I’m on the wave, riding it, but my thoughts are still scattered, and the peace I crave is nowhere to be seen.
Instead, I see is Evie’s perfect fucking face and I hear her voice in my head with way more clarity than I need right now.
I just need her gone.
Do I really?
Yes. I just need to tell her what I have to tell her, and then we’re done. And doing this will finally close the door on her.
I won’t ever truly be over her. I’ll always love her. But I have to let her go now.
It’s on that thought that I hit the wave like a novice, and I’m flying off my board. Following in my rookie mistake, I don’t protect my head with my arms, and the board smacks me right in the face.
“Fuck!” My voice is gargled up with water, the shock of it momentarily stunning me, and then I’m kicking back up, breaking the surface.
“Jesus Christ,” I growl. I touch my hand to my face to make sure I’m not bleeding, but my eye is throbbing like a bitch.
Fan-fucking-tastic.
I reel my board in and get back up on it. I ride the whitewash back to shore.
I walk up the sand, dump my board on it, and drop down, lying on my back. I cover my face with my hands and let out a groan of frustration.
“Want to tell me why you just wiped out like a rookie?”
I move my hand away to see Grady standing over me, his overgrown gray hair dripping water on me.
“Not particularly.”
He leans in for a close inspection. “Gonna need some ice on that eye.”
“It’s fine.” I sit up. Knees bent, I link my hands over them and stare out at the surf. I envy the other surfers out there, enjoying their solitary freedom, while I’m trapped in my head.
Grady drops down to the sand beside me. “You wanna talk about what’s bugging the fuck out of you?”
Grady’s been a good friend to me over the years. Probably more like the father I never had.
After Evie left and things went to shit, I moved to Boston and went to Harvard like Ava and Eric wanted, but I always kept in touch with Grady. Part of it was that he was a link to Malibu, my link to Evie, even though he didn’t know where she was. She hadn’t only abandoned me back then. Somewhere along the way, Grady became my friend.
We surf together every weekend. Max usually comes with us when he’s not stuck in the office. He’s got a big case at the moment though, and it’s eating up his time. He’s an entertainment lawyer at his family’s company. Hates it just like I hate my job. Max and I were screwed from the second we both were born.
Letting out a sigh, I dig my toes into the sand. Staring ahead, I say, “Evie’s back.”
I haven’t said those words to anyone, not even Max, yet.
“Ah,” Grady says.
“Yeah.” I exhale. “She’s in Beverly Hills, working at the coffee shop in the fucking hotel I call home five days a week.”
“You talk to her?”
“For all the good it did me.”
“How is she?”
Of course he would want to know that. He cared about Evie, thought of her as one of his own, because that’s just how Grady is.
“She’s okay, I guess.” I shrug. “We didn’t really get around to the pleasantries.”
He nods. “She tell you where she’s been all these years?”
“San Francisco.”
“Not that far away,” he muses. “Did you get the answers you wanted? Why she left?”
I let out a humorless laugh. “Not really. I got a lot of bullshit reasons but not the truth.”
“What was the bullshit?”
“That us getting married was too much too soon, and she panicked and ran.” My hand slips into the sand, and I curl a fist around the grains.
“Sounds plausible.”
I give him a look. “Sure, if she hadn’t upped and left with her whole family. Her panicking and leaving is one thing. Uprooting and moving when her sister was as sick as she was? It’s bullshit, Grady. It doesn’t make sense. It never did.”
“So, what could it be?”
I shrug. “You know, back then, I used to think that maybe it was…”
“Ava?”
“Mmhmm. I just…I don’t know anymore.” I blow out a breath.
Back when Evie first left, I did think that it could have been Ava’s doing. Of course, when I asked her, she denied all knowledge.
But, then, what could Ava have done or given to Evie to make her leave? To make them all leave?
Money?
It’s hard to believe that because Evie was never about money. If it were money, then I’m glad she left because she wouldn’t have been the
person I thought I loved.
But, then, it’s not like she has money now. If she had money, then, she wouldn’t be working in a coffee shop.
Sometimes though, I feel like there’s a voice whispering the answer in the back of my mind, just slightly out of my reach.
Grady stares out over the water. “You know, you might never get the answers you want.”
I huff out a breath. Opening my fist, I let the grains run through my fingers. “Yeah, I know.”
“And did you…tell Evie?”
Grady is the only person who knows my secret. And the only reason he knows is because it was not long after I got back from Boston. I just bought the house. It was what would have been my and Evie’s third wedding anniversary. I got drunk off my ass, and I broke down and told him the truth.
Meeting his eyes, I shake my head.
“Fucking hell, Adam.” He sighs.
“Don’t give me shit, Grady. She turned up out of the blue after ten years. I wasn’t exactly thinking straight.”
“That might be, but you’re thinking straight now. She might have left you, but this isn’t something you can keep to yourself. She has a right to know.”
Bowing my head, I run a hand through my hair. “I know.”
I’m just not sure how to tell her.
“You’re actually ditching me to go surfing with this chick?” Max complains from the living room.
“Stop being a whiny bitch. It’s just today. And we’ll probably see you down there anyway.” I get the orange juice out of the fridge and pour myself a glass.
“Yeah? When? In between you both sucking face?”
I let out a laugh. Walking over to the breakfast bar, I lean my stomach against it. “Jealous much? And you were the one who told me to ask her out.”
He rolls his eyes at me from his spot on the sofa. “Yeah, but I thought you’d just bang her and move on. That’s what you normally do.”
“Not this time.”
Max sits up, a look of shock on his face. “Holy shit. You haven’t fucked her, have you?”
I shake my head before taking a drink of my orange juice. “She’s only seventeen. And anyway, it’s not like that.”
“Not like what exactly?” He gives me a suspicious look.
I lift a shoulder, unable to explain it or anything about what I’m feeling for Evie. “I don’t know. She’s just…different.” I turn from him, putting my glass in the sink.
