Chapter 110
Chapter 110
The temperature gradually started to drop, and most people in the settlement no longer felt like going out.
The newly constructed warm houses began to be put into use one by one. These days, Cloudy was quite busy, inspecting each house. She couldn't let the newborns be used as guinea pigs, so...
Cough cough... Titus stood in the middle of the house, coughing, while Cloudy, with a dirty face, was next to him, surrounded by mud. The smallest warm house had developed issues after multiple uses, possibly due to improper use of mud before, leading to cracks after several rounds of baking, allowing cold air and smoke to seep in.
Titus covered his nose, frowned, and looked at Cloudy. "This house, is it beyond repair? Should we give up on it?"
How could they give up on it! Although smaller than the others, it was after all the first warm house built. Upon careful consideration, it was precisely because this warm house was initially built for testing purposes that they were facing these issues now. Yet, giving up on maintenance after all the effort put into repairs seemed somewhat regrettable...
On the other hand, the other three warm houses were functioning normally, and the newborns had already been moved into the sturdiest one to start getting accustomed.
It's worth mentioning that as the temperature dropped, Cloudy started to pay more and more attention to Titus. He now spent more time sleeping every day, sometimes not waking up until the afternoon to eat something, then curling up under the blanket on the bed. Titus's fondness for the feather fur blanket was similar to his initial attachment to the down-filled pillow.
Wrapped in the warm blanket, it still felt soft inside. Seeing how content he looked bundled up, Cloudy began to consider whether she should make some simple rainy season gear for this wild man with a streak of luck.
After the previous hunts, she had materials in abundance, like a dragon's hoard - three large frames of feathers, many furry small animal skins whose names she couldn't recall... making a set of rainy season pajamas for Titus should be more than enough! The only hindrance was her poor sewing skills and the lack of sharp fishbone needles.
But these were not insurmountable issues; she could even make charcoal and clay pots, so a mere set of pajamas... was quite challenging, especially the sleeves. Unlike simply sewing two large pieces of animal skin together, clothing and pants clearly involved some tailoring theory.
The fabric for the clothing definitely needed to be soft, which was another part of the problem. Most of the soft-furred animals in the rainforest were small, whereas Titus was so tall, piecing together animal skins consumed a lot of time.
The softest fur was to be placed against the skin as the lining, with the inner side roughly sewn into shape first, while the outer side of the animal skin could be a bit more casual, as long as it was thick. It took her about two days to make two sleeve tubes, using approximately 20 of the softest and most comfortable animal skins from home. The front and back pieces of the top were the main event; without physically measuring Titus's body, she truly had no idea about his brown, sinewy muscles.
Due to the exaggerated chest and shoulder width, the front and back pieces of the upper garment almost exhausted all the soft animal skins at home. Especially during the measurements, Titus kept moving around, thinking that measuring the chest meant hugging him, so he grabbed Cloudy's hand and swung it around, greatly delaying her work process!
The production of the furry upper garment took about 4 days. Due to issues with putting it on and taking it off, she had to do a little rework. Originally, she wanted to make it a direct pull-on style, but the animal skin had no elasticity. To allow Titus to put it on and take it off directly without getting stuck, the neckline had to be opened wide, sacrificing some of its warmth. She ended up staying up late to study buttons... and decided to add two buttons at the front. The button research also helped her make the pants, which didn't require as much attention to detail in terms of materials as the upper garment. However, out of humanitarian considerations, she still used soft and non-irritating animal skin for the crotch area to prevent Titus from feeling itchy when he pees.
In this way, the upper garment and pants together took 6 days to make. In the colder weather today, Titus wore this mismatched animal skin rain season pajama set. His large size, combined with the dark-colored patchwork animal skins, made him look like the legendary yeti of the snowy mountains.
However, the wild man didn't care about his appearance; he only felt satisfied and surprised, saying, "Cloudy is amazing! This... is better than before!"
Of course, it's better; she painstakingly crafted it, far surpassing the wild man's animal skin skirt.
Today, when they came to repair the warm hut, Titus was wearing this pajama set. Initially, Cloudy wanted to stop him because the hut's walls were damaged, and smoke might soil his clothes. But seeing Titus happily fiddling with his pajamas, she decided to let it go, finding joy in watching him. Besides, constantly nagging Titus wasn't a good habit; she was always scolding him for something.
The two of them tinkered around in the warm hut all day, but by the afternoon, they hadn't fixed it. In the end, Cloudy had to reluctantly agree with Titus's suggestion and give up on this smallest hut. Looking on the bright side, nobody would live here during the rainy season anyway; she just felt a bit sorry and wanted to fix it. After all, the walls of this hut were made of mud bricks... it might turn into a charcoal-burning room in a few days, but she hadn't planned it out yet.
After coming out of the hut, it was unexpectedly windy outside, with the wind blowing from the west of the rainforest hitting her face... a rare occurrence. Cloudy considered it a comfortable season, with a perceived temperature not exceeding 30 degrees, and the frequent winds made her wake up feeling fresh every morning. Titus and the other locals were different; they all seemed like mushrooms grown in a warm place, not moving an inch.
Titus liked her, which was why he followed her around the settlement in this temperature; otherwise, he might as well have become a mushroom.
"... " because it's windy.
Titus tried to tuck his head into his collar, asking Cloudy, "Are we going for food?"
"Are you coming with me or resting?" Cloudy tugged at Titus' arm, signaling for him to lift her up. Once in his arms, she wrapped her hands tightly around Titus' neck, also covering his head between her arms and chest to shield it from the wind. "Rest, Titus, go to sleep. Let's head home first, you can eat."
"Okay!" Titus turned his head a couple of times, nuzzling against Cloudy's warm chest. "This feels nice and warm. Let's go out like this later!"
Thinking it was too much trouble, Cloudy silently planned to make a scarf or hat for Titus using leftover materials at home. She looked up at the sky, noticing a slight grayness in the color, and clouds gradually increasing, unlike the hot season.
"This rainy season, I'll keep Titus warm and let him rest well. It won't be like last time... that way." She leaned closer to Titus's cheek. "You don't need to worry about the newborn, isn't that great?"
Titus responded by rubbing his cheek against hers. His cheek felt slightly cooler than before. With their cheeks pressed together, their eyes squinted. "That's great!"
The two of them walked slowly towards home, heads leaning against each other, murmuring quietly.
