Chapter 3: Who Was She?
The next morning Harper woke up with a very, very bad headache and a fuzzy memory of last night’s events in Paige’s bed. She groaned. Paige shuffled beside her. Harper thought about the man from last night; all she could remember was his blue eyes and husky voice. Had she even learned his name because she would like a repeat performance of last night? She looked at the clock: it was ten. “Ugh...I need to get up.” “Shush!” Paige snapped, “I’m trying to sleep.” Harper drug herself out of bed, took something for her headache, brushed her teeth, and took a shower. Then she went downstairs where Paige’s mother Mrs.Porter, was making coffee. “You look like shit,” she said. Harper grinned; she loved Paige’s mother. She was so straightforward and had no filter. “Thanks. Could I have a cup of coffee?” “Of course. One second.” “Thanks.” Harper sat at the counter and watched Mrs.Porter make her a cup of coffee. “Here you go, dear.” “Thank you.” Harper sipped the drink appreciatively. “Did you have fun last night? Paige drunk called me twice.” Harper laughed, “Yeah. I did.” “A young man dropped the two of you off.” “He did? Who?” Mrs.Porter shrugged, “I’ve never seen him.” Harper nodded: probably one of Paige’s conquests. Paige drug herself downstairs, “Morning.” Mrs.Porter smiled, “And I thought Harper looked like shit.” “Moooooom. I need coffee.” “Coming right up.”
Harper enjoyed the Porter company until about one that afternoon when she headed home. When she arrived, Harvey was heading out. “You’re leaving?” she whined. “Yeah. Me and the guys from my team planned to hang out.” She pouted. He chuckled and rolled his eyes, “I’ll be back.” She sighed, realizing her pouting wasn’t working properly, “Okay.” He turned and left.
………
Cole stared into his drink. The only thing he could think about was the girl from last night. She’s been the best lay he’d had for as long as he could remember. He remembered everything about her because he hadn’t had anything to drink that night. Normally, when he came back from touring in Afghanistan, he was annoyed when his brothers threw a rave because he just wanted some peace and quiet. At the time, he was headed to the kitchen to get a drink then head back to his room, but once he ran into her, his drink was forgotten. He couldn’t complain about her boldness either. He sighed; he hadn’t gotten her name or number, but instead took her back to her friend’s house when she came looking for her. “What’s on your mind?” Harvey asked him. Harvey was his partner in the line of duty and one of his best friends at home. “Women. What else?” Cole chuckled, trying to make light of the situation. Harvey knew he never slept with the same woman twice since his ex cheated on him while he was on tour, so to say that he wanted a repeat would raise eyebrows. Harvey looked around, “Tell me about it. There’s a lot of good chicks around here. Women dig military men.” Cole nodded; he wasn’t going to let on that he had zero interest in sleeping with anyone besides the woman from last night. A few minutes later, their friend Jonathan joined them and Cole focused on enjoying the time they had together.
