White Lies
Relationships are challenging enough for most single over-thirty women. For level-ten parasensitive Clare Lancaster, they're a minefield. The elite few who know her secret call her a human lie detector, and any falsehood, no matter how subtle or well hidden, sets her blood racing. Over the years, Clare has come to accept that someone with her extraordinary talents is unlikely to find a suitable mate. And she's even resigned herself to the fact that everyone, to one degree or another, hides behind a facade.
Including her recently deceased brother-in-law. When Clare finds the body of Brad McAllister, the golden child of Stone Canyon, Arizona, the posh residents turn a suspicious eye in her direction. As Archer Glazebrook's daughter, Clare is shielded from the law, but not the gossip. It seems that meeting the half sister and family whom she did not know until seven months ago was a mistake. Now her father summons her from California to play a role in his business empire, and Clare doesn't intend on making the same mistake twice.
But after meeting Jake Salter, Archer's "business consultant," she is convinced that things aren't what they seem. Salter's careful conversation walks a delicate line between truth and deception, revealing and resisting. Something sparks and sizzles between them - something more than the usual electricity between a man and a woman.
Caught in a dizzying storm of secrets, lies, and half-truths, Jake and Clare will plunge into an investigation that demands every bit of their special gifts. Together, they must overcome their mutual distrust in order to unravel a web of conspiracy and murder.

I would have never guessed the ending. Terrific character energy and witty dialog. I hared for it to end. Fun read. .

Jake knows that Clare isn’t the murderer, but he has to be able to find who is, and prove it too.
Together they’ll have to find out just who is orchestrating it all…Technically the second book in the Arcane Society series, in the timeline it is set after all the historical romances in that series! It references several events that are in the past, but actually occur later in the series- just to confuse you!
Unlike in the historical romances, in this contemporary story, Arcane has finally developed a way to rate the psychic abilities of its members.
Both Clare and Jake are off the charts, and it has led to numerous issues in their private lives, but it makes for perfect acceptance of each other on their parts.Between the action, the paranormal skills, and the beginning of a much larger conspiracy, the reader will be amply entertained.
There is plenty of action, a spot of humour, as well as romance to round it all out, and the Paranormal Romance fan will find this a binge-worthy series, even if you only read the contemporary books, and don’t try to follow the series order!

White Lies is a fun read that has it all if you love everything JAK. The story has it all—suspense, paranormal talents, hot romance, intrigue, and mystery. Loved the skillfully crafted characters as well as the intertwining Jones & Jones/Arcane Society link that spans volumes and generations in Krentz’s cleverly plotted worlds. An enjoyable book!

WHITE LIES is the second book in the Arcane series. It is a contemporary romantic suspense book. Clare Landcaster is a high level parasensitive who is a human lie detector. Because of her abilities, she has a difficult time trusting people. She has come to Arizona to meet with her father and half siblings. At her father's home, she meets Jake Salter an Arcane business consultant, who she can tell has secrets. The two hit it off (reluctantly on Clare's part). Soon, Jake's undercover investigation crosses with attempts on Clare's life. As the two investigate, they also end up learning each others secrets and falling in love.
I really like the relationship between Clare and Jake. Clare is a strong woman who has been wounded by her desire to protect her family. The book is filled with misunderstandings and mistrust between all the characters. This is not a romance where the conflict is dominated by misunderstandings, rather it is the other characters who don't trust one another. As Clare states, everyone lies and this book is filled with people who are lying for various reasons. I have a great fondness for Jake who is determined but funny and considerate. The relationship between Clare and Jake remains the focus of the book even as the suspense story progresses.
The book also introduces one of my favorite characters in the series: Fallon Jones. HIs book is simply amazing but there are several books before that one.
The writing in the book is clean and straightforward and thus the suspense is sustained throughout the book. Although this is the second book in the series, this book can be read independent of that book. The Arcane books can be read independently, however, there is a continuing story that a dedicated reader will find satisfying as the plot unfolds in this and the subsequent books.
