The Viper
The war for Scotland’s sovereignty rages on—as Robert the Bruce is crowned king and the Highland Guard, his elite fighting force of legendary warriors, battle for land . . . and love.
Prized for his snakelike stealth and deadly strikes, Lachlan “Viper” MacRuairi is a warrior to enlist but not to trust. His only loyalty is to his purse, his indifference sealed by bitter betrayal. All that changes when Lachlan is tasked to protect and deliver Bella MacDuff to the king’s coronation—and the proud, lushly sensual countess unwittingly challenges him to his greatest battle yet: to love again.
Passionate and devoted, Bella has defied Britain’s king and her own husband to place the crown on Bruce’s head, and for this she pays a terrible price: Losing her daughter and her freedom to her husband’s vengeance. Imprisoned with barbaric cruelty, she vows to reclaim her child, even if it means selling her soul—and her body—to a dark, lethal warrior whose eyes glint like steel, but who makes her skin tingle and her breath race. Together they embark on a rogue mission with sinister twists and turns that threatens not only Bella’s gamble to save her daughter—but also her heart.

Although a little redundant in the beginning it really came together and spelled out a beautifully romantic love story. She created some deep characters and heartbreaking yet redeeming scenes.

I loved this book.. I have read all of McCarty's books and it was a true to character book. Although I knew that Viper would not be one of my favorite characters, she brought him to life just as he should have been, a bad boy. I was not happy with the use of the F word, which was used not only by him but Bella once as well. However, it is understandable with his character.
The history, and violence of that time, was reflected well. I would have liked a little less angst in the romance area, ...I loved this book.. The history, and violence of that time, was reflected well. I would have liked a little less angst in the romance area, but all in all, a great keeper book. And, an awesome series. Can't wait to read more about the Highland Guards.

I have been anxiously waiting to get to Lachlan MacRuairi's story. He character is everything and more of what I expected. He has been paired off with Isabella Countess of Buchan. We met Isabella/Bella when she crowed Robert The Bruce King of Scotland. Now she has been captured and imprisoned for treason A Stone Cage was built like a cross and hung over a cliff for her and each of her fellow captives. For nearly 3 years she is cruelly treated and punished. Her husband has divorced her and she has lost her young daughter. I don't usually like stories of abuse to women but these story has some historical bases and I do enjoy reading the Highland Guard series. Lachlan feels guilty for her capture. On his way returning Isabella to her home and to get her daughter Joan they are captured. Joan believes he betrayed her to the English. She couldn't see that he had been captured too. He was chained and put in prison and tortured. The only thing that saved this story for me was the authors ability to tie me to the characters and the fact that Isabella was not raped. But she was brutally treated! ! The other thing that saved the story for me was the marvelous way Lachlan and the HG rescued her. The story also has a great romantic and satisfying HEA. I loved the epilog!!

Loved this series and this one just might be my favorite. If you haven’t read the highland guard novels and you are a fan of this genre at all.. read them-you are in for a treat! Monica McCarty weaves a beautiful story that transports you to another time. The heroines are strong, relatable characters and the hero’s are hot (especially Viper with his bad attitude- even his friends don’t really like him). I loved getting to see another side to the infamous Lachlan and meeting the woman that can break through to his hidden heart. What’s better than that? These books are filled with vivid detail, tension, build up and great dialogue. Love scenes are smoking hot without overpowering the story. There is also a section at the end of each book that the author connects history with the characters and events she took inspiration from. I’ve read this whole series, most of the books more than once. They really are that good!
