Prisoner
"Dark, sexy, and intense, Prisoner is an emotional ride that does not let go until the end. I loved it!" ~ USA Today bestselling author Kristen Callihan
He seethes with raw power the first time I see him--pure menace and rippling muscles in shackles. He's dangerous. He's wild. He's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.
So I hide behind my prim glasses and my book like I always do, because I have secrets too. Then he shows up in the prison writing class I have to teach, and he blows me away with his honesty. He tells me secrets in his stories, and it's getting harder to hide mine. I shiver when he gets too close, with only the cuffs and the bars and the guards holding him back. At night I can't stop thinking about him in his cell.
But that's the thing about an animal in a cage--you never know when he'll bite. He might use you to escape. He might even pull you into a forest and hold a hand over your mouth so you can't call for the cops. He might make you come so hard, you can't think.
And you might crave him more than your next breath.
"Sexy, dark, and thrilling. I loved every second of it!" ~ New York Times bestselling author Katie Reus

Reading this was an intense experience. The writer has a great focus, on the characters emotional lives and the never ending internal conflicts, with very elaborate internal dialogues. But it is truly a story about love, in its realistic real life brutality, and with all the chaos and destruction that goes with it. It’s about all love. Love for yourself, for your lover and for sex. Love for the people in and around your life, and for the world.
Love in all its mercilessly enchanting, addicting, all consuming, indescribable, ugly truth, and all the unexpected and twisted places, and people we find it in.
And the erotic passages of the book are absolutely delicious! I have read quite a few books in that genre, and only a couple of times before have I been this satisfied, with the erotic part of a book.
Everything from the amount of scenes, the length of each together with the timing, and especially the choice of words and amount of details. The dragging out and the “build up” is on point.
This suspense creates this craving inside, that grows until the first touch releases all this energy built up inside. If you’re into that ⬆️; Read it ! You won’t regret it !!!

I had two reasons I didn't give this a five star rating, but I REALLY wanted to because this book is RIVETING! It's very well written and the development of the sexual chemistry and interest between the two characters had me fanning myself. I'm going to start by talking about what I loved about this this book then I'll discuss my two deduction points.

First off - this is in first person POV. Not usually my favorite, because so often it isn't done well, but for this story where it is so much about the hero battling his inner demons, it needed to be. Also it made it really fun to see the heroines POV when she sees him in prison for the first time. And it is done SO WELL!
My favorite part of the book were the first 10 chapters or so as the heroine meets the hero because she is in college/grad school (not quite sure, her backstory is never much said or developed beyond one story related to her mother/stepfather. We never know where she lives, works, only that she is doing a project with inmates. Or if this is said, it is glossed over and I missed it because I was so fixated on how hot the hero was LOL. Could have totally happened). Anyway, they both are very attracted to each other, but no touchy touchy in prison obviously. And he just gets this impulse of - she's MINE.
This is a captive heroine trope, and a revenge trope. The authors flirt with making the hero a dark hero and I'll talk more about that later, but they never go there. The hero is actually very soft underneath. This book is a romance underneath this bleak prisoner exterior. A romance that came out of nowhere and surprised the heck out of me with how psychologically moving it was.
As a trigger warning - the hero was sexually abused as a child. It is not explicitly described, you only know that that is what happened to him. I am a weenie with this kind of stuff and I was fine with the amount of description in this book but I wanted to make sure to mention this for potential readers.
Now to the two things that made this book less than five stars when it EASILY could have been. The first sexual interaction between the two of them is dubious consent. The heroine knowingly drinks orange juice that is tranquilized so she will sleep. She's been trying to get away (she's been kidnapped after all) and the hero hasn't slept for 48 hours and he needs to know she won't go anywhere. She drinks it.
He is not intending to have sex with her, but she is all horny times (equivalent of taking a drunk girl home from the bar). He hasn't had sex in two years while in prison and caves and they do it. In the morning, she kind of remembers. They otherwise wouldn't have had sex this early in the story - she's not his biggest fan obviously, but this dubcon, ruined what is otherwise a ROMANCE. The hero is NOT DARK. In my opinion, the authors were toeing the decision of making him dark or not. But when you look at the arc of this book after you are done, he's a soft guy. I really wished their first sexual interaction wasn't this way because it ruined it a bit for me.
Which brings me to point two - the HEA. (Slight spoiler here obviously). We never get a tender moment between these two. No I love you or even a kiss/intimate soft moment during sex at the end with the hero/heroine. She says it to him earlier, he never says it. He never even thinks it during his internal monologue that I saw, although he alludes to their deep connection. But for me - I NEED the declaration.
They enjoy rough sex - totally fine, but for me, couldn't there have been one moment in the ending sex scene where he even just pauses and looks at her tenderly or something? Just one moment? Again - he is NOT dark. He is a softie underneath. I felt this was a disconnect with the character and with the story, which was a romance. A moving one actually. A really GREAT ONE in a lot of ways.
You will not want to put this book down. A ton of action, the hero is AMAZING! The heroine - eh, less developed, not as connection-worthy, but its still a wonderful book.

Holy cow, this read was INTENSE! It's a prison break thriller with a love story. Just be prepared for the heroine to be in mortal danger for more than half the book. But what a well-written page turner. The authors wrote a gripping tale that took twists and turns that I wasn't expecting. It was an unconventional love story with complex, tortured characters who develop over time. I'm happy that they found joy in each other. It was an unconventional love story with complex, tortured characters who develop over time. I'm happy that they found joy in each other. Yet, while I found this story satisfying, I won't be re-reading it anytime soon simply because it was very dark and had aspects that were sad/painful to read.
