Four In Hand
From the sparkling ballrooms of Regency London to the wealthy glamour of the country house - let Stephanie Laurens be your guide! Max Rotherbridge had unexpectedly inherited a title and estates that were more of a burden than a blessing. But he hadn't bargained on inheriting the wardship of four beautiful and spirited young ladies. He certainly hadn't expected to behold the embodiment of all his dreams in the lovely Miss Caroline Twinning, oldest of his wards. Society was stunned when the Duke of Twyford introduced four beautiful debutantes to the ton. The wicked duke was more likely to seduce the innocent than protect them! As the Season continued, Max guarded his protegees like a hawk, fending off his fellow rakehells. But one by one, the most confirmed bachelors fell at the feet of the Twinning sisters. And Max knew that he couldn't long escape his destiny - marriage to Miss Caroline Twinning!

I won't describe the story, there is plenty of that here already. I read this book years ago (many times, I'm a serial re-reader) and still have the paperback. I just bought it for my Kindle, because I prefer reading on it these days. Anyway, for those of you looking for something light and fun without graphic descriptions of 'pulsating' and 'throbbing' body parts this is a good read. I saw a complaint that there was 'no sex' in this book and that is part of what I like. The sex scenes in the...

I saw a complaint that there was 'no sex' in this book and that is part of what I like. The sex scenes in these kinds of books are almost always ridiculous anyway, you know...throbbing, burgeoning, pulsating, heaving (Yeah it makes me want to heave, just not the same way...ha ha!). Anyhow, I'd just as soon skip that and read something funny and touching. Like this book. Maybe there are a few thin spots in the plot, but it's still a very enjoyable book.

An early book by Stephanie Laurens shows her wonderful promise as a historical romance writer. Lots of humor, fun glimpses of regency England, and the problems of 4 orphaned, beautiful girls at this time in history. She weaves a lovely story of the way the Ton operates and how debutantes are introduced into that society. The young women find love rather than being forced into marriages of convenience, which was also common at that time. I love a happy ending and this book delivers that.

I like Stephanie Laurens' work a a rule but did not like this book. Four virginal and exceptionally lovely young women enter their first London season, and circumstances place them as wards of a handsome duke, Max Rotherbridge. As the story plays out, it's made ultra clear that Max wants to seduce the eldest sister, Caroline (the hell with marriage), while three of his rich & handsome boon companions have exactly the same intentions regarding the three younger sisters.

There were things about the book I enjoyed -- some of the social repartee and the girls banding together to help another young debutante. BUT. I guess it just reminded me of my younger years when I was a relatively attractive miss hoping to meet a man with honorable intentions -- only to find that they were few & far between. I kissed a wagonload of frogs. This story has a happy ending but the anxiety of reading line after line about the rakes' lustful and insensitive intentions was somewhat disturbing. I can't really recommend it.
