Verity and Jonas Quarrel are happy with their lives in Sequence Springs. Verity owns a local restaurant and Jonas is her dishwasher and waiter. Because Verity cannot stand to see his doctorate in Renaissance history go to waste, she talks him into writing an article or two. Unknown to most others, Jonas has the psychic ability known as psychometry. He can tell if an item from the Renaissance period is authentic. However, if it is a weapon with a dark background, Jonas is pulled into a time corridor where he can view the weapon’s past and he must deal with hidden dangers. Luckily, Verity is his anchor. She enters the corridor too and keeps the time vines from overwhelming her husband.
Verity and Jonas meet Doug and Elyssa Warwick. They are siblings who have inherited a sixteenth-century villa. The Warwicks want Jonas to come to the remote island in the Pacific Northwest to confirm the villa’s background and perhaps do some treasure hunting since their ancestor had always insisted one resided somewhere in the large home. Verity and Jonas arrive to find out that there are other guests in the villa as well. What was to be an easy side-job turns into a mystery with very dangerous happenings.
**** FOUR STARS! The characters of Verity Ames and Jonas Quarrel can also be found in the book titled “Gift of Gold.”> It is there that the two meet, fall in love, and have their first adventure. However, you do not have to read these two books in order. (I certainly did not, so I should know.) Each title stands alone. For readers, such as myself, who do not know that the pair have another story, the author clearly explains the ability Jonas has and how Verity anchors him. Because they are already a couple, less time needs to be spent on their romance and more time is given to the plot. That does not mean that therea re fewer bedroom scenes. Everything is well written. The characters are fully developed and the writing style is smooth. This is a terrific tale that I thoroughly enjoyed. ****

I love Jayne Ann Krentz and this book didn't disappoint. It's fun, suspenseful and has enough romance to make it interesting. What's a JA Krentz book without romance? As a follow-up to Gift of Gold, it sticks to the storyline perfectly; and what a storyline! If it hadn't been a JA Krentz book, I might not have given it a try. Don't let that stop you from reading it. You will really enjoy this book especially if, like me, you're a Krentz fan. The characters stay true to form and you find yourself totally hooked. Don't forget to read Gift of Gold first; it's a must in order to follow this story.

The Arcane Society should keep an eye on this couple. Fiery Verity Ames and adventurer Jason Quarrel find that they need each other in unexpected ways. This sequel to Gift of Gold has a good story, good romance and a reasonably good ending, but it took way too long to get into the main plot.

I would have enjoyed the book more if there were about 75% fewer gratuitous sex scenes. This was annoying enough for me to take a star off of my rating. I wasn't sure if the book was meant to be read principally as an erotic romance or if the erotica was just a way to expand the number of pages in the book. If you are easily offended by verbal erotica, then you should probably skip this one. If you are interested in original paranormal adventure with some romance, then I say give this a try.
I would have enjoyed the book more if the many typos in this edition didn't keep breaking the flow of the story. I don't know about the original edition, but Gift of Fire--Kindle edition could be used as a case study proving that proper use of quote marks does indeed matter. There are plenty of other typos as well, but dialogue gets confusing when quotation marks are missing. The expertise of a good proofreader would have given my 3-star rating at least one more star.
If JAK was following here current pattern when she wrote this book, this story would have made a good Harmony ghost hunter plot.
