They remained friends during their marriages. Their spouses were both dead now. They met up again when Allie came to nurse her brother's children with the measles. Piers was now 36 he was going to inherit a title so he was going to remarry for an heir.Allie was was in love with him still and he her. He instead asks her help in finding him a wife. They just would not relate their feelings for each other. He was looking for the same silly type of woman as his first wife.
Piers gets trapped int a betrothal with Cassandra Barden a young empty headed debutante. He goes to tell Allie he is going to marry the other woman. They both have their one night together then and she leaves for Bath.
He realizes the marriage will be a disaster but will still go through with it. His bride to be goes out with other men instead of him. Allie and he love each other will they walk away again or will somehow get their HEA. Mary Balogh is my favorite author. I have been buying some of her earlier writings at a high price. I am so glad she is reissuing some of these books. I liked the First Snow Drop, Dancing with Clara. In her earlier books too.

This is one of four recent releases of out of print works by Ms. Balogh. It is not as good as her present day releases, but I wouldn't expect it to be. She has been writing for 30 years after all.
I see no need to rehash the plot. Others have already done a fine job of that. I found it to be a light enjoyable read. Not quite as long as todays novels, but that was fine with me.

A delightful, well written, period accurate book. And how magical to encounter a non-heroic Hero, who is gentle, witty and honourable. The heroine is a self-contained, restrained lady of deep feelings, and possibly a little too independent. this book is so different yet absolutely lovely. Mary Balogh maintains the Hero's character throughout the tale, and even though he is not the normal powerful, more attractive hero, his quirkiness grows on the reader with each encounter. Well, this reader anyway. My only complaint is the brevity of the happy ending.
