I loved this book! I read it before years ago and just picked it up again. I love Jace and how he sees Nellie. I read it straight through over the course of one evening and the next morning.

This is a well written book. The characters and plot well developed. I story was similar to Cinderella, in that, Nellie the older sister basically slaves all day to run her father's household. This is a well written book. The characters and plot well developed. I story was similar to Cinderella, in that, Nellie the older sister basically slaves all day to run her father's household. The family does have one servant, but she is lazy and frequently found ways to avoid doing any work. The father pampers his youngest daughter Terel, who was very attractive and spoiled. The father had plans for Terel to make an advantageous match with Mr. Montgomery (handsome prince). Montgomery who is wealthy also comes from a family of wealth. The father envisions his business growing and Terel her social prominence.
Mr. Montgomery is not take in by the superficial beauty of Terel, not but rather is smitten immediately by Nellie. Nellie is kind-hearted, shy and overweight. She is belittled by her sister and father continuously about her weight. She is treated like a servant rather than a member of the family. She does not demand better treatment because she believes that she is showing her love for her family by catering to their every demand.
We have a reluctant fairy godmother, Berni. Berni died recently and instead moving onto heaven or hell was sent to the "Kitchen" where she will be given an opportunity to help Nellie to get a happy ever after. Much to Berni's horror she can grant Nellie 3 wishes to accomplish this task. Berni was like Terel in her former life. She was petty, manipulative and vain. She is disgusted by Nellie and believes her life is miserable because she's a "fatso". If she would stop eating her life would be better. She believes Nellie is jealous of Terel.
As Berni comes to learn throughout the book Nellie is starved for affection. She eats as a respond to stress, to fill that empty void. Her families manipulation and Terl's gas lighting becomes destructive. As Mr Montgomery becomes more smitten with Nellie the family fears losing Nellie who keeps the household together, Terel is resentful of the attention her sister is getting, so they sabotage the blossoming relationship and it works. I just can't get the level of deception and cruelty this family displayed towards Nellie. Repeatedly Mr Montgomery tried to get Nellie to see how her family were using her, but her mind and heart would not allow her to contemplate that people who say they love you would hurt you.
Nellie made her 3 wishes for the benefit of her family and it resulted in her almost working herself to death; beause as usual her families wishs benefited them not her. She lost weight, the people in town came to see her beauty both on the inside and out.
However, she almost lost the love of her life as he could not longer tolerate her families manipulation and Nellie turning a blind eye to their behavior.Berni in time came to see the havoc that she caused and admitted that she had misjudged Nellie. Berni was allowed to return to earth to correct her mistakes, but she had to get very creative to correct her mistakes. In the end Nellie and Mr Montgomery got their happy ever after and Berni appropriately punished and rewarded both father and sister for their actions.
Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. Mr Montgomery was loyal and steadfast, he saw Nellie's beauty from the start. Wishes can come true.

I loved Nellie, she`s not perfectly thin, she's not a model, but she I realistic. I loved Jace too. He saw beyond the physical and even found the physical great. The story is cute, fun, and great. It's rare to find an author who can keep you up all night on a reread, yet Jude does it. I read this one in 5hrs. Same as the first time I read it. Thank you Jude Deveraux for writing such a wonderful story. Fans of fun imperfect heroines and heroes will enjoy Wishes.
