Prey: A Novel
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “Survival of the sexiest . . . This is high adventure and nonstop romantic suspense.”—Bookreporter
Thirty-two-year-old Angie Powell has always spoken her mind, but in the presence of Dare Callahan she nurses a simmering rage. Three years ago, Dare returned home to rural Montana and opened a hunting business to rival Angie’s own, forcing her to close up shop. The infuriatingly attractive Iraq war vet even had the nerve to ask Angie out, not once but twice. Before Angie leaves town, she organizes one last trip into the wilderness with a client. But the adrenaline-fueled adventure turns deadly when Angie witnesses a cold-blooded murder and finds herself on the wrong side of a gun. Then a bear comes crashing through the woods—changing the dark game completely. Luckily, Dare is camping nearby and comes to her aid. Forced together for survival, Angie and Dare must confront hard feelings, a blinding storm, and a growing attraction—while a desperate killer and a ferocious five-hundred-pound beast stalk their prey.

I read a few of the negative reviews and felt I needed to put in my two cents worth. I do love Linda Howard, but I have not loved every one of her novels because a few of them have been a bit too "dark" for me. My favorite books of hers are the ones with humor. This book is not full of humor, but this was a good book. The relationship between the two main characters did not begin immediately, but the build-up was necessary to the story. The plot did involve an evil protagonist, but the overall story was not dark like several of her past novels. In a book world filled with the mediocre, Linda Howard's books are always above the rest. I guess if you compare this novel to her others, it would not be number one, but it would certainly not be last. And in comparison to other authors, her novels are far and away above most. You can depend on her to provide entertaining stories. She is one of my go to authors, and she creates books that can be reread and enjoyed over and over. This book will definitely be one that I can reread and enjoy.

I don't have it in me to bash a Linda Howard book and I'm not going to repeat the plot since others have taken the time do so in accurate detail. I think it's curious that another reviewer compared this book to 'Ice' because I wasn't far into it when I noticed plot and relationship similarities with 'Cover of Night' (loved it!) and gesture and language similarities with 'Mr. Perfect' (loved it!) Those similarities didn't reduce my enjoyment of this book at all. Other than the bear, who was in...
Other than the bear, who was interesting at first and then incredibly, painfully tedious I liked the plot, the details, the personalities...I liked it all.
Okay, I agree with several others that this is not Linda Howard's best. This is not even close to her best. But I think it's actually a good book and when the bear starts to share too much with you, you can page down. You won't miss much and that gets you to the good parts with Angie and Dare all the sooner. I think you'll really enjoy them and appreciate their interaction. There's quite a bit to admire about Angie, and what's not to like about Dare???
If you want to read Linda Howard on her 'A' game (books that are a little older like Dream Man, Dying to Please, Mr. Perfect, Cover of Night,) don't start here. If you like her style and can handle a 'B' grade instead, take a chance. While it's not her best, it's a Linda Howard book and that makes it worth the chance in my mind. I'm not ashamed to say that I liked it.
